Types of Therapist Licensure

Understanding the different types of therapist licensure is helpful for choosing the right mental health professional for your needs. In Colorado, therapists hold various licenses such as Licensed Addictions Counselor (LAC), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), each with specific qualifications and expertise. Learn more about the differences, including the roles of pre-licensed clinicians and interns who are gaining supervised experience. Explore this guide to make informed decisions about your mental health care and find the best therapist for you.

What do the license acronyms mean & what are the differences?

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

  • An LCSW holds a master's degree in social work (MSW) and has completed state-specific licensure requirements, which often include supervised clinical hours.

  • LCSWs are trained to provide a wide range of social services, including psychotherapy and case management.

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

  • An LPC has completed a master's or doctoral degree in counseling or a related field and has met all state licensure requirements.

  • They have gained clinical experience through internships and post-graduate supervision.

  • LPCs are licensed to practice independently, diagnose mental health disorders, and provide psychotherapy to clients.

Licensed Addictions Counselor (LAC)

  • An LAC is a graduate-level mental health professional specializing in addiction counseling.

  • They hold a master's degree in counseling or a related field and have met state licensure requirements specific to addiction counseling.

  • LACs work with individuals struggling with substance abuse and addiction, providing counseling, support, and treatment plans tailored to address addiction issues. LACs are qualified to do individual psychotherapy, not just addictions work.

  • Many clinicians hold both a LAC and another counseling or social work license.

pre-licensed clinicians under supervision & interns

Pre-Licensed Clinician Under Supervision

  • This refers to individuals like ADCC, LSW, LCSW-C, and LPCCs who are in the process of completing their supervised clinical hours and other requirements for full licensure.  They have completed a master’s level degree in counseling, psychology, or social work.

  • They work under the direct supervision of a licensed clinician who oversees their clinical work, provides guidance, and ensures compliance with ethical and legal standards.

  • Pre-licensed clinicians can often provide counseling services but may have limitations on the complexity of cases they can handle independently.

Intern

  • An intern is typically a student or recent graduate who is gaining practical experience in a supervised setting as part of their educational program.

  • Interns may not yet have a license or be eligible for independent practice.

  • They work under the guidance and supervision of licensed professionals, gaining hands-on experience and applying their academic knowledge in real-world settings.
